Cholla Trail

As wonderful as Cholla Trail is, it was tempting to not even bother describing it for this site. This trail was once open to the public with a small parking lot at the base to serve its devotees. However, as Camelback's popularity increased, the trail became more and more populated and the traffic burden on Cholla Lane required that the trail be closed. In 1999, the path re-opened without its parking lot, and hikers now need only park on Invergorden Road and make the short stroll up Cholla Lane to the trailhead. It is hoped that hikers will continue to be respectful of the neighborhood so that the trail can remain open.

At 1.75 miles in length, Cholla Trail is somewhat more level than its counterpart, Summit Trail. The trail slowly winds up the east side of Camelback Mountain, riding the ridge for much of the ascent. There are wonderful views of Paradise Valley and of the Phoenician Resort. After 1.4 miles, the trail opens up at a saddle with views of P.V. to the north and all of Phoenix to the south.

This saddle makes an appropriate stopping point for many people, as the last segment of the trail is much more rugged. This exciting last stretch involves climbing, occasional back-tracking, and a lot of caution. It is one of the best hikes in all the Valley. The trail concludes at the top, where it meets with Summit Trail. You may decide to continue down the other side of the mountain, however you will find yourself four miles from Invergordon on foot (unless you brought two cars). If you make it back to Invergordon on foot, you will have completed a 7-mile loop.

Aside from the last section of the trail, Cholla also makes for an ambitious run. At the very least, the trip back down provides certain stretches that tempt most people to jog a stretch. Mountain bikes and pets are prohibited.
