This trail is a popular "draw" for those Valley residents looking for a spectacular view of our beloved urban sprawl. Siphon Draw is a steep, quick trail that goes straight up to a beautiful panorama at an elevation of 4,861.
The top of this natural staircase is called Flatiron, a peak that sticks out from the mountains and allows a wonderful view of the entire Valley. For the ambitious, there is a further ridge that allows a view to the East as well.
To get to Flatiron, start at the Lost Dutchman State Park. Follow the signs to the trailhead, and hike straight up the 1.5 mile Siphon Draw Trail. Then comes a 3000 foot natural staircase to the very top.
The ascent is not technical, but is difficult and must be taken carefully. Follow while paint marks across loose stones and most of all head for the sky. In the end, it's worth every inch.
Getting There: From Phoenix, drive east on U.S. Highway 60 to Apache Junction and take Highway 88 (Idaho Road exit) to Lost Dutchman State Park ($3 day-use fee). Follow signs inside the park.
