Although it's only the second highest mountain in Phoenix, Squaw Peak is considered by many the premier mountain and landmark along Phoenix's skyline. The Phoenix Mountains Preserve is a 9,000 acre park in the center of the city with many trails running from one end to another.
Squaw Peak's Summit Trail is by far the most popular of these trail, and is also the most hiked trail in Phoenix. In fact, only the Grand Canyon's Bright Angel Trail gets more foot traffic in Arizona.
At 1.2 miles, this hike is both short and challenging. The trail quickly runs up the mountain at a grade of 100 feet per tenth of a mile. The trail is characterized by many switchbacks and little plantlife. The views of the city, however, are wonderful and it's no surprise that this trail is so popular. There is a wide, open viewing area at the top where you can relax and enjoy panoramas of Phoenix's glorious urban sprawl.
Getting There: From the Squaw Peak Parkway, take the Lincoln east to the entrance for the Squaw Peak Mountain Preserve. Turn left and follow the road to the Summit Trail parking lot.
